HOW TO DRAWING CHARACTER FOR BEGINNER

I warn you this tutorial didn’t teach you how to paint from 0% (I mean like how to draw human, how to add shading, and other), just a few information about painting digitally that maybe you didn’t know. Make sure you understand how to draw and coloring, especially in digital because in this post I’ll show you how I made my paintings.
Since I don’t have a pen tablet that digital artist usually use for drawing using drawing software in PC, I use Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. and more choice like

which I can install in my smartphone device. It’s not a promotion but after testing some drawing applications on Play Store, I think it’s the best app for painting and has easy interface. You can get the original application on Play Store. Don’t forget to buy the pro version to get the full feature and support the developer. Here are the steps:

1. Sketching the pose Add a new layer above the background layer. Using basic pen or pencil, draw a rough sketch of the pose you wanted. Make sure you draw the anatomy correctly. You don’t need to draw this perfectly because it’ll deleted soon. By the way I changed the background to gray because white is making eyes tired quickly. Beige is good too.

2. Adding the character to the pose Change the opacity of the pose layer around 10-20% then add a new layer above it. Now start drawing the character following the pose you’ve already made.

3. Creating the lineart Lineart is the clearest version of your sketch (in my opinion) which later you can add the color easily. Hide the pose layer and change the opacity of the previous layer to 10%-20% and add a new layer above them. Follow the sketch with one stroke. If you’re using Paint Tool SAI, you can use the curve in Lineart layer. Draw every part of the character in different layers like hair, clothes, and accessories. This prevent when there is a wrong stroke and you can correct it easily. If you’re done, delete the sketch layers (step 1 and 2) because we’ll working with this clearer sketch.

4. Cleaning up the mess Since we are working with lot of layers before so usually there’s a mistake even it’s small. You need to erase to make it neat. If already neat, then merge the lineart layers.

5. Adding the base color Add new layers underneath the lineart layer. Why much layers because we’ll working on each color in different layer to prevent the unwanted colors mixed. Like the color you should use for skin shading now mixed with your beautifully finished hair. Fill with desired base color using basic brush like pen. I don’t recommend you to use bucket tool because I always have white pixels near the lineart and we won’t color the lineart this time. Also it’s hard to work in one layer.

6. Adding the simple shading and the light source Don’t forget to lock the transparency every color layers! Add the desired lighting source by adding a new layer and draw a simple sun so you know where parts that hit by light. Using the brush that you usually use for shading, start shading with darker color from the base. I also add her blush here.

7. Shading Still shading but this time using the darker color than before and I add a lighter color than the base on the parts that hit by light. If you noticed the brownish color on her shirt, I added it to make her shirt looked more realistic. Not flat just using white to black.

8. Deepening the shading Okay now you noticed that I’m a bit shy to add color so bear with me. Here I marked the area which will be the shadows with darker color. You can see the shadows started to visible.

9. Adding shadows with dark blue Dark blue?! Yes, I’m not kidding. As you can see, it made my character looked more realistic so I recommended you to try this. Like when adding the shadow to skin, dark brown is just too flat (the color range on skin is only orange to red). I learned this from kawacy which you can see the reference here.

10. Changing the lineart color and filling the whites My style is semi realism so black lineart is too cartoony for me soI locked the lineart layer and color it. I added a new layer and filling the whites. I also added strands to her hair.

11. Adding the multiply and soft glow layers If you open the layer properties, you can find the blend mode that included Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, Overlay, and other. But now we’ll only use Multiply and Soft Glow. I don’t really know the purpose of Multiply but I found it’s like deepening or sharpening the color while the soft glow is will make your painting looked more glow like its name. Soft glow effect is good for lighting, but don’t use too much. Add two layers above everything, one for Multiply, and one for Soft Glow. I add black on Multiply layer and white on Soft Glow layer. Arrange the opacity of the layer until you found the desired color.

12. Finishing I add the glow effect on her eyes using Soft Glow layer too and now you can see she’s looked alive! Here you should add and fix the thing that maybe you forget before. In my case I forget to add shading on her hair band. Change the background and you’re DONE!

Tadaa!!! beautifull right?? :v, Yup thats all the tutorial and don't forgot to follow INSTAGRAM aprilblitz04
